Working towards a more sustainable future.
Working towards a more sustainable future.

About this event

CEEQUAL is the sustainability assessment, rating and awards scheme for civil engineering, infrastructure, landscaping and the public realm, initially created in the early 2000s through a development project led by the Institution of Civil Engineers.

Roger will describe the essence of how CEEQUAL works and how, by providing a tool for project and contract teams to use to assess how well they have dealt with the environmental and social issues they face, it is also a significant influencer of the project and contract outcomes. Roger's talk will explain how these positive influences arise.

In addition, he will explain the recent change of ownership (CEEQUAL was acquired by BRE Global in November 2015 and the opportunities that this change presents. There will be ample opportunity for questions and discussion afterwards.

Professor Roger Venables

Roger has a broad-based background in mainstream civil engineering, followed by a long spell at CIRIA working on innovation and research on construction and offshore & underwater engineering. He then formed Venables Consultancy and, later, Crane Environmental with his wife and business partner (and ICE Past President) Jean Venables, and has been one of the leading figures seeking to improve the sustainability characteristics and performance of civil engineering and other infrastructure.

Roger led the team that developed CEEQUAL and, from 2006 to October 2015, led the team that operated CEEQUAL on behalf of the civil engineering industry and profession. Following the acquisition of CEEQUAL by BRE Global, Roger stood down as Chief Executive and Head of Marketing, but now has a continuing role in promotion of CEEQUAL and the opportunities that the new arrangements provide.

In parallel with running Venables Consultancy and its sister company Crane Environmental, Roger has held a Royal Academy of Engineering Visiting Professorship in Engineering Design for Sustainable Development at Queens University, Belfast, and is a visiting lecturer on the MSc in Construction Management at City University, London. He is also editor for the quarterly newsletter, Innovation & Research Focus, which promotes the application of innovation and research in construction and the built environment led by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).

In 2001 Roger delivered the ICE's Brunel International Lecture on 'Delivering Sustainable Development' and has lectured widely on the challenges posed to building and civil engineering clients and professionals by the sustainability agenda.
