About this event

Built in 1873, the Severn Tunnel forms a critical part of the rail network between England and South Wales. Today some 200 freight and passenger services use the tunnel every per day.

The construction presented significant engineering challenges including the construction of drainage culverts and a pumping station.

After nearly 130 years of service the tunnel is seeing some of its most intensive maintenance to date in order to modernise and electrify the asset as part of the Great Western Route Modernisation.
