Tunnelling in the UK: The old and the new, Coalville

About this event

The challenges of the UK tunnelling industry range from the management of our aging infrastructure to the successful delivery of new major multidisciplinary tunnelling projects. This presentation will discuss how tunnelling has evolved over the years and the lessons that have been learnt along the way.

The Great Western Railway Modernisation will reveal the technical challenges associated with upgrading Victorian rail infrastructure, such as Brunel's 3km Box Tunnel, and the modern methods used to overcome these. Further examples will highlight the opportunities for redeveloping existing underground structures and the complex nature of carrying out construction works in the vicinity of existing tunnels.
