You are invited to join South East England Region’s Retired Members’ Group for a day out on the Watercress Line’s steam railway, to include a visit to the site of some new railway infrastructure.
After the success of the RMG’s visit to Robertsbridge and the Kent & East Sussex Railway in 2017, this trip will provide a further opportunity to visit another steam railway in a more central SEE location The visit will include a steam train return journey to Medstead (subject to the completion of a new bridge) or, to Alton. We will also be taking a “behind the scenes tour” of the Watercress Line’s Engineering Works at Ropley and a visit to the Butts Bridge site on the A32 in Alton, where a new bridge is being constructed to free up building land for residential housing. This construction will also allow future development of the railway onto the old Meon Valley route. Visit buttsbridgeroadworks.co.uk for more details.
The day will commence at Alresford Railway Station where we will meet at 10.30, ready to take the 11.00 train to Ropley. There we will visit the Engineering Workshops for a guided tour to see what is happening behind the scenes with repair and rebuilding of some of their steam and diesel locomotives. On completion of the tour, we will take the next train to Medstead or Alton, again subject to the bridge completion by the scheduled date. From there, we will return to Alresford by train where lunch will be arranged at a local hostelry.
Subject to ongoing discussions we are also offering a site visit during the afternoon to the Butts Bridge site where the old Whitedown Lane bridge has been dismantled and the embankment partially removed to create the new road junction between the A339 and the old Winchester Road (A31).
Group rates for this visit may be available offering a discount of £3 on the standard rail ticket fare of £16, assuming a minimum attendance of 15 people is achieved. A deposit of £5 will be required on booking, the balance to be paid upon arrival.
