The Wakefield Eastern Relief Road (WERR) will be a single carriageway highway between the A638 Doncaster Road to the south and the A642 Aberford Road to the north. The road crosses the River Calder and the Wakefield–Normanton–Castleford railway line.

The key objectives of the scheme are to:

  • Ease inbound traffic congestion issues.
  • Improve the safety of the arterial road network into Wakefield.
  • Increase the accessibility of future housing and employment growth.
  • Support new city centre developments in Wakefield.
  • Support the "Emerald Ring" green vision.
  • Reduce the number of accidents caused by high levels of car usage into the city centre.

The road is intended to open up substantial job creation opportunities by providing direct access into the East Wakefield employment growth area for residents across Wakefield (resulting in an estimated 4,000 new jobs). The road acts as an alternative route around the city centre and thus should improve conditions for bus services, pedestrians and cyclists, as well as creating opportunities for complementary sustainable transport measures within and to the Lower Kirkgate area. It will also help to accommodate future development traffic in the east of the district.

The scheme is supported by the West Yorkshire +Transport Fund as a regional priority.

For more information and to book, please contact Hugh Allan at: mail@hughallan.net by 15 February 2016 stating your lunch requirements. Buffet lunch is £11 plus £2 for dessert (pay on arrival).

Organised by the ICE Yorkshire and Humber Retired Members' group.
