With a changing climate, are we meeting the challenges? Middlesborough

About this event

The Climate Change Bill followed and gained Royal Assent in December 2008 with the aim to create a new approach to managing and responding to climate change in the UK. Since then a concerted programme of proposed actions led by the Department of Energy & Climate Change and Defra, has been put forward across UK Government. This programme of actions, launched in July 2008 gave a particular emphasis to climate change adaptation in line with the UK Climate Change Act (2008).

It included the need for regular risk assessments, infrastructure adaptation programmes and auditing of outcomes in addition to monitoring mitigation initiatives.

Since then the world climate has continued to change, so much that severe weather events have produced record breaking occurrences since then with devastating results on populations in the UK and world-wide.

The presentation will endeavour to consider future climate change, priorities for professionals, whether society through government are meeting the challenges identified in 2008, and whether decision makers are responding adequately to the assessed requirements to safeguard lives and property.
