ICE Wales Cymru & ICE Scotland Workshop: How civil engineers can enable low carbon choices

About this event

The ICE has published an annual State of the Nation (SoN) report since 2002. The aim of these reports is to stimulate debate and to highlight the actions ICE believes are needed to improve the UK’s infrastructure services.

This year’s SoN evidence-gathering activities and report will build on SoN 2020’s recommendations by exploring HOW civil engineers can contribute to the reduction of carbon emissions in the built environment. The question it will seek to answer is: How can civil engineering enable low carbon choices?

Workshop agenda

  • Welcome
  • Introduction: State of the Nation 2021 presentation
  • Break-out sessions
  • Group discussion

Questions for break-out sessions

  1. In any aspect of your life, how have you changed your behaviour to choose lower carbon options?
  2. What made you change your behaviour?
  3. What types of things are effective at influencing you and what doesn’t work for you (as a professional or consumer)?
  4. As a civil engineer, what could you do to encourage end users to choose lower carbon options? We are looking for examples from every type of infrastructure – transport, water, energy, waste, structures, flood & coastal management.
  5. What (if anything) would have to change for civil engineers to have more influence on the choices end users make?
