The A63 Castle Street scheme is one of the most complex Highway improvement schemes in the UK currently. In the centre of Hull, the current interchange roundabout contributes to widespread congestion both within the city and to those travelling to the Port of Hull from the M62.
The project is approximately 1.5km long and involves the conversion of a hamburger roundabout to a split-level junction with a 400m underpass. There is also a new pedestrian footbridge to be constructed and exhumation of 19,000 bodies from a burial ground prior to main construction.

Due to the poor ground conditions and proximity to the River Humber, a bespoke pumping facility and rising main also need to be constructed adjacent to the underpass to prevent flooding. Further complications have arisen where one of the slip roads.

This event will focus on how digital implementation has helped to overcome these challenges demonstrating the value of digital rehearsal and constructing the project in the virtual world prior to construction.

Speakers

Joe Laurence

Joe is a digital delivery engineer at Balfour Beatty and graduated from the University of Liverpool with a Civil Engineering MEng. His interest in BIM started in his Master’s year where he was tasked to design an aquatics centre in 3D and prove it’s structural integrity.

Following graduation, Joe worked with Interserve as a Graduate Engineer on a school project in Leeds. His interest in BIM saved that project £60k in remedial works.

As a digital delivery engineer with Balfour Beatty, his work has helped to inform key decisions with how they build a complex project and identify potential issues.

James Leeming, IEng, MCIHT, ChPP, MAPM

James is a NEC accredited Senior Project Manager with 23 years’ experience within the traffic, civil engineering, road safety and project management field. Since Feb 2017 he has worked for Highways England and the Senior Project Manager on the A63 Castle Street Improvement Scheme and Princes Quay Bridge scheme in Hull.

He is also Regional Chair of the CIHT Yorkshire and Humber Committee. James will introduce the scheme within the event and provide an insight into how digital benefits have been realised by HE – particularly around the use of drones.
