Edinburgh University Hyperloop team, HYPED, will present on the success and challenges of their pod prototype and UK route proposal in International competitions run by SpaceX and Hyperloop One.
HYPED is a University of Edinburgh student society built around passion of Hyperloop technology. Formed in 2015 to participate in the first SpaceX competition, they broke through to the semi-finals and received a Subsystem Technical Excellence Award for modular design of the pod and consideration of passenger loading/unloading process.
The group has also been shortlisted as a semi-finalist in Hyperloop One Global Challenge where they pitched an Edinburgh to London route as the corridor where Hyperloop will bring a massive socio-economic change - the entry was one of 35 selected among 2600 entrants. They presented to a panel of judges and experts in Amsterdam (June 2017) and have been selected as one of ten winners of the Global Challenge. This is an enormous success putting HYPED at the centre of Hyperloop developments worldwide.
As a result, the team will work closely with Hyperloop One on refining the idea for their route. HYPED is the only student group in the winning ten - other groups include leading engineering consultants and contractors, governments, policy-makers and governmental agencies.
The presentation will close with questions from an infrastructure expert panel. Sitting on the panel will be Dr Guy Walker, Associate Professor at the Institute for Infrastructure & Environment at Heriot Watt University; and Mark Connelly, Chief Engineer and Professional Head of Highways at Atkins.
