About this event

After Action Review, or AAR, is a simple and practical team learning technique pioneered by the U.S. Army. It was originally used for army training, and later accepted by army officers as a way to capture learning during and after a mission.

In the last 20 years, AAR has been adopted successfully in government, non-profit and business organizations. It was primarily used for project review, operational review and strategic business review. Commanders in disciplinary forces, project managers and business managers are learning the new role as a facilitator and how to draw out the collective wisdom of their team members.

AAR could bring many benefits to an organization. On a team level, members come together during or after a project, to share their individual learning experience and make up a complete story and understanding of the situation. Knowledge is then created from the level of individual learning to team learning. The guidelines of AAR also help people to focus on preventing future mistakes and identifying good practices, instead of fault finding. On an organizational level, AAR helps to build trust among people and a learning culture.

Dr Philip Fung

Dr. Philip Fung is the founder of Houston Leadership Training Center. He has more than 25 years of experience in leadership development and management consulting. He held senior management positions in three Hong Kong public-listed companies from 1996-2005.

Dr. Fung is best known as a specialist in knowledge management. He has been invited by numerous professional bodies, Government departments and private organizations to give talks and to conduct workshops related to the strategic use of knowledge. He was one of the founders of Knowledge Management Development Centre (KMDC), a non-profit professional body. He served as the Vice Chairman until 2006.
