About this event

Join this annual Great Debate, led by the University of Reading and Engineering Institutions of the Thames Valley to discuss whether autonomous electric cars are the future of personal transport.

The event will consist of four short talks by experts in the field followed by an opportunity for the audience to ask questions of a panel formed by the speakers and to offer their own views. The four talks will cover:

  • The challenges of moving to electric cars – what are the drivers for this and what are the issues that will arise in making a successful transition.
  • Electric cars - a review of progress in the field and future direction. What are the key issues and how are they being addressed.
  • Autonomous cars – a review of progress in the field and future direction. What are the key issues and how are they being addressed.
  • Legal, legislative and ethical issues – there has been a fair bit of debate about ethical issues and it is likely that these will in part drive changes to the legislative framework to allow autonomous cars to be used widely.

Each talk will last 12 minutes with approximately an hour available for the audience participation.
