About

Portsmouth

By the early nineteenth century, the world's first mass-production line was set up in Portsmouth Dockyard, making it the world's most industrialised site and the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution.

Portsmouth was the most heavily fortified town in the world and was considered the world's greatest naval port at the height of the British Empire.

About

Portsmouth

Portsmouth remains one of the world's best-known ports, and is considered the home of the British Royal Navy, containing two-thirds of the UK's surface fleet. It is also home to the Mary Rose, Henry VIII's flagship vessel which sank in 1545. It remained on the seabed until 1982 when it was raised and it's now permanently homed in its own museum. The harbour at Portsmouth is one of the busiest in the country, with 130,000 annual movements.

The city was also the birthplace of Charles Dickens and Isambard Kingdom Brunel. With this illustrious history, it is an ideal city to host this prestigious conference, ICE Breakwaters 2023.
