About this event

Crossrail 2 (CR2) is a proposed new high-frequency, high-capacity rail line running through London and into Surrey and Hertfordshire. It will add capacity to the rail network in London and the South East as well as support economic regeneration by providing the infrastructure needed to build new homes and create jobs.

With a proposed opening date of 2030, the new line will:

  • Enable the development of up to 200,000 new homes across the region
  • Address significant capacity constraints on the National Rail network, particularly on the South West Main Line on the routes from Waterloo Station
  • Provide capacity for 270,000 more people to access Central London during the weekday morning peak period, helping relieve capacity constraints across the London Underground network.

The Crossrail 2 (CR2) scheme is developed & promoted jointly by Transport for London & Network Rail with TfL looking after the Core Operating Section, and NR looking after the On Network Sections. The route consists of a new twin-bore tunnel across London, which joins the NR network at Tottenham Hale & Wimbledon.

The scheme is in its development phase currently scheduled for Hybrid Bill submission in early 2020’s.

The presenters will describe the background to the project and the key engineering challenges to be addressed in both the Core and On Networks Sections.
