Design Challenges for Deepsea Mining Risers and Vertical Transport Systems

With increasing demand for strategic metals and risk of supply shortages in some metals, countries are turning to investigating mining in the deep sea, but, significant technological challenges have needed to be met and overcome. One of these is the design of a riser or vertical transport system, that brings the material up from the seafloor upto 6000m below.

2H Offshore has already been involved in a number of challenging seabed mining riser design projects from around the world. Various possible riser configurations for the vertical transport system have been investigated and their strengths and weakness evaluated to establish solutions. The challenge to operate the riser system and mining tool crawler together are also addressed.

The talk will share how riser design and engineering techiques and other lessons learnt from deepwater oil and gas drilling and production have helped to meet the challenges and demands that the mining riser system needs to overcome.

Deepwater Application of Steel Lazy Wave Production Risers For Offshore Oil and Gas Developments

Steel Lazy Wave Risers (SLWRs) provide a cost effective riser solution for challenging deepwater production systems used in the offshore oil and gas industry.

SLWRs, a variation of the steel catenary riser (SCR), have recently gained popularity in moderate to deepwater applications. Due to their simple design, qualfied fabrication and installation methods and design flexibility, SLWRs can be a potentially good alternative to SCRs and flexibles.

SLWR configurations are developed for a range of water depths and riser performance is evaluated. The pros and cons of SLWRs compared to other riser types are discussed as a cost effective development option for deepwater oil and gas fields.

Richard Harrison

Richard Harrison is Technical Authority at 2H Offshore Engineering and has worked since 2003 on analysis, design and consultancy of riser systems. He has been involved in the EU funded Blue Mining project, improving the technological readiness level of deepsea mining considering the design of a VTS (vertical transport system).

Rohit Shankaran

Rohit has 10 years of experience in Riser, Conductor and Subsea Engineering. Experience includes engineering design and analysis of offshore drilling, completion and production risers and rigid jumpers, integrity management of subsea components. He has a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering from Texas A&M University and Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from Osmania University in India. He is a registered Chartered Engineer with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and has been with 2H Offshore since 2010.
