About this event

Park the design codes, ignore the Eurocodes, and take a well-earned rest from detailed design. Engineering is as much about an approach and way of thinking. This talk encourages engineers to put down the calculators, and think about what they are designing, and how they engage with the design team and contractors.

Consider how it is going to be built, what impact the design will have on the built environment both during and after construction, and enjoy the journey rather than just the focusing on the end product.

Refreshments will be served from 5:30pm, with the event starting at 6pm.

Speaker

Stephen Smalley

Stephen has over 15 years' experience in the construction industry. In those years he has gained experience in steel frame, concrete, timber and load bearing masonry design, as well as Project Managing notable large and smaller scale commercial, education, industrial and Heritage projects. Before joining Design ID, Stephen was an Associate with Ramboll.

Having started his career with a Contractor, Stephen has a keen eye for constructability and building sequencing and as such is able to understand and overcome issues at the early project stages, therefore minimising project risks and increasing cost certainty during the construction process. The environment must be at the forefront of all we do in our industry both now and when considering the life of the project and beyond.

Stephen has designed with 'zero carbon' materials, considering both the embodied and sequestered carbon, however no matter what material is used, he is passionate about lean design; limiting the volume of material used is paramount, and Stephen has developed tools and methods for benchmarking designs at every stage of the project to manage both risk/cost and eCO2.
