Gemma Sherwood (EDF Energy) and Mark Scorer (Atkins) will be giving a joint presentation about aspects of the ground engineering and design for Hinkley Point C.

The EDF Hinkley Point C (HPC) project comprises the construction of a new twin-reactor nuclear power station near Bridgwater, Somerset. We are currently in Year 3 of a 10-year construction period of a new 3.2 GW power plant which will power 6 million homes and will provide 7% of the UK’s electricity. This £19.5bn station will replace existing Hinkley Point B, which is due to begin decommissioning in 2023.

This will be the first time the European Pressurised-Water Reactor (EPR) design has been built in the UK, and it is the first New Nuclear Build (NNB) in the UK for 25 years. At its peak HPC will be the largest construction site in Europe, with 5,600 people working on site in any one shift and will generate 25,000 employment opportunities.

Gemma will discuss her experience working on site during the enabling works phase of the construction. As a Senior Field Geologist in the EDF Energy Construction Technical Support team, Gemma is involved in assessing the engineering geology compared to the design assumptions including inspecting rock formations, mapping horizontal and vertical excavations and assessing the rock for its mechanical properties in-situ and for re-use. There have been a number of ongoing engineering geology challenges due to the geological formations found on site that will be discussed during the presentation.

Mark will discuss his experience developing the detailed design of the Balance of Plant structures on HPC for the EDF Responsible Engineer (CNEPE). As a Principal Geotechnical Engineer at Atkins, Mark has led the geotechnical engineering input to the detailed static and seismic analysis and design of over 20 nuclear safety-related buildings and over 8km of technical galleries, forming the Balance of Plant structures for HPC. This has included structures with significant below-ground embedment as well as fully buried service tunnels. There have been a number of engineering design challenges due to the complex nature of these structures and the site that will be discussed during the presentation.
