About this event

Mott MacDonald was a key leader in the successful business cases for the combined £45m investment in both schemes, and delivered detailed design and site supervision during construction. The Schemes have safeguarded over 4,500 properties from erosion risks in the next 100 years.

Amenity and regeneration benefits in both communities were a key driver for the Schemes and successful outcomes are already tangible. Both Schemes provided interesting interaction between the coastal management approaches and coastal cliffs with associated London Clay platforms under the beaches.

The presentation will consider:

  • The knowledge and influence that the London Clay wave cut platform had on the design and construction.
  • The re-use of excavated London Clay in driving sustainable design and whole life carbon management, through incorporation in the beach and works design and
  • The interesting interaction between settlement of the rock groyne structures on the London Clay platform, and sea-level rise scenarios, and how these effect time bound performance.

The efficient completion of the coastal protection works at Clacton led Tendring District Council to appoint Mott MacDonald to develop a pro-active cliff management strategy that addresses not only high priority stability remediation but also longer term sustainable management of the coastal cliff assets whilst improving their social and economic value. Understanding the Geomorphology, Engineering Geology and Geotechnics of the Cliffs underpins this strategy.

Speaker

Peter Phipps - Head of Coastal Management and Engineering, Mott MacDonald.
