Humber Bridge Hanger replacement & testing, Hull

Free

The bespoke temporary access platform and hanger exchange jacking equipment

About this event

The Humber Bridge is a Long Span Suspension Bridge that crosses the Humber estuary connecting The East Riding of Yorkshire with North Lincolnshire. As with all pieces of large infrastructure, periodic maintenance is required to preserve their structural integrity. One such element that requires replacement on suspension bridges is the hanger cables that connect the deck to the main suspension cable.

This talk will give an overview of the Humber Bridge Hanger replacement and testing project that required the design, fabrication and install of bespoke de-tensioning equipment and access platform allowing the hangers to be exchanged in a safe and controlled manner.

In total three hangers were exchanged using the custom gantry and de-tensioning equipment. The complete hanger assemblies were then sent to Norway for full scale destructive testing along with one new hanger. This allowed a comparison to be made between the new and old hangers to assess their condition and predict when intervention will be required on the remaining hanger cables.
