As one of the key programmes of ICE 200, a series of three ICE Bicentenary Distinguished Lectures will be launched in 2018
“There is No Bridge Too Far” is the first lecture, elucidating one of the key messages of ICE 200: Civil engineering is a creative, rewarding and fun career for anyone. Dr Robin Sham, AECOM’s global long-span and specialty bridge director as well as a newly appointed CBE and Dr Ana M Ruiz-Teran, Senior Lecturer in Structural Engineering in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Imperial College London will share their insight and exploration into Innovation and Excellence in bridge engineering.
We are delighted that Mr Andrew Heyn, OBE, British Consul General to Hong Kong and Macao, deliver an opening speech.
Refreshment will be served from 6:15 pm and the event will start sharp at 6:45 pm on 13 March 2018.
Dr Robin Sham received his doctorate from Imperial College London, through seminal research into artificial intelligence in bridge design. He is recognized worldwide for his innovative contributions to bridge engineering; creating several of the longest and most monumental bridges in the past decades.
He pioneered the design of ultra-long span bridges through his development of twin box vented, and three-pylon, two-main-span suspension bridges. His leadership in the application of engineering science to construction accomplished record-long cable-stayed bridges with main spans exceeding 1,000m. He has also delivered some of the largest and most strategic sea links in recent history.
He is a Gold Medalist and Brunel Medalist of the Institution of Civil engineers (ICE), an Achievement Medalist of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, a recipient of the Nova Award for Innovation, and has been identified by the Engineers’ Society of Western Pennsylvania as one of the greatest bridge engineers in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. His design for the ICE, of the world's longest suspension bridge built entirely of LEGO bricks has set a Guinness World Record.
In 2018, he has been appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, for outstanding services to the civil engineering profession.
Dr Ana M Ruiz-Teran is a Senior Lecturer in Structural Engineering at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Imperial College London. Her teaching, research, and professional experience are focused on the area of Bridge Engineering. After graduating with an MEng in Civil Engineering at the University of Cantabria (Spain) in 1996, she worked in industry for Apia XXI, and Arenas y Asociados, Ingenieria de Diseño, as a chartered bridge engineer, being involved in the design and construction of multiple bridges. In 2005, she gained a PhD degree at the University of Cantabria with a doctoral thesis on under-deck cable-stayed bridges, and soon after she received the 2009 fib Diploma for Research. Since 2011 she has worked as an academic at Imperial College London.
Her main research interests are related to the structural response and design criteria of innovative bridge types (such as under-deck and combined cable-stayed bridges, curved and spatial arch-bridges, and other types of cable-supported bridges), the accidental breakage of stay cables, and the dynamic response of road, railway, and foot bridges under traffic loads. She has supervised numerous PhD students and is involved in research projects in the UK and the European Union (EU).She is member of the Editorial Board of the ICE Journal Bridge Engineering.
She is professionally qualified as a chartered Civil Engineer in the UK (CEng MICE), Spain (MCICCP) and in the EU (Euro Ing).
