This ICE East Midlands Geotechnical Group’s webinar will focus on how innovative methods and designs for the underground constructions can improve their sustainability.
Concrete and steel reinforcements in tunnel linings are two of the largest contributors of carbon dioxide emissions for tunnels and underground spaces. Improvements can be made by either replacing materials or changing the design. However, substituting materials and components for ‘greener’ ones can often offer only limited gains.
Drawing on his recent experience of underground constructions in Scandinavia, Alun Thomas will examine how adopting innovative designs can help reduce environmental impact. He will also explore how to improve the sustainability of underground constructions by adopting a more open approach to new methods and products with lower environmental impacts.
Alun is a tunnelling engineer with broad experience of many types of tunnelling methods, from immersed tubes to segmental linings, from closed face tunnel boring machines (TBMs) to hand excavation under compressed air.
He is a specialist in sprayed concrete lined (SCL/NATM) tunnels and his book on this subject has been translated into Chinese and Turkish. He has been involved in promoting the use of permanent sprayed concrete, fibre reinforcement and spray-applied waterproof membranes.
Over the last 25 years he has been involved in many of the recent major UK tunnelling projects such as the Jubilee Line Extension, Heathrow Express, Terminal 5 and Crossrail, as well as working on design and construction of tunnels internationally.
Alun is active in many industry bodies and he is Vice Animateur for the ITA Working Group 12 – Sprayed concrete. He founded All2plan in 2019 to offer design services, tunnelling expertise and advice on sustainability to projects worldwide.
