About this event

The future of infrastructure is now.

Project delivery has been changing rapidly over the last few years and the rhythm is only bound to increase, as new technologies are being introduced and visionary organisations begin to harness the benefits of going digital.

Augmented reality, machine control and BIM will continue to transform the infrastructure landscape by increasing efficiencies, reducing errors and costs, and unlocking a wide range of possibilities for new designs.

The annual Joint ICE and Topcon Lecture on Innovation will provide delegates the opportunity to hear the experiences of early adopters and join the conversation on how the industry can reach the full potential of digital technology.

Malcolm Taylor, Head of Technical Information, Crossrail

John BeswickMalcolm Taylor is Head of Technical Information for Crossrail in London, UK. His current responsibilities include: BIM strategy and implementation; asset information management; technical data management; document control; GIS; and configuration management.

He is a Chartered Engineer – prior to joining Crossrail he was Rail Director for a major global consultancy working on many UK and international rail projects. Starting as a Graduate with London Underground, Malcolm now has over 35 years’ experience in the design, construction and maintenance of large-scale transportation projects around the world, with a particular emphasis on railway design, programme and project management.

Ville Alajoki, Senior Project Manager (Bridges), City of Helsinki

John Beswick
Mr. Ville Alajoki, MSc, is responsible for bridge construction in the public works department at the City of Helsinki, Finland, and for the adoption of Building Information Modeling within his division. He has been heading design competitions and leading major bridge construction projects in the Finnish capital area, such as the Crown Bridges –project started back in 2009, where he has been implementing BIM as a standard in the design process.

Ville is actively developing design competition processes in collaboration with the Finnish Association of Civil Engineers and is regularly guiding master's thesis works at the Aalto University, Tampere University of Technology and University of Oulu. As of January 2017, Ville Alajoki acts as an expert board member at buildingSMART Finland representing Finnish counties in the board of the Infrastructure User Group.

Martin McDonnell, Chairman and Founder, Soluis Group

John Beswick
Back in 2000 Martin founded Soluis with the aim of delivering best-in-class 3D visualisation and interactive presentation methods. Now, over 16 years later, the Group – represented across 3 distinct brands; Studios, Interact and Apps –is delivering a growing range of visual media and engagement platforms to businesses operating at all levels of construction and property.

Today, in his role as Soluis’ Chairman, Martin harnesses his visionary approach to lead the Group's pioneering work in connecting the latest digital platforms and gaming technologies to the needs of different market sectors. This has led Soluis to be amongst the earliest innovators in bringing the benefits of augmented and virtual reality to the property, design, construction sectors and beyond.

This drive in applying technology to some of the industry's most fundamental challenges has helped guide Soluis to two major innovation competition wins in 2015; scooping one of only three inaugural Higgs EDGE awards at the Scottish EDGE Finals and being selected as one of the winners of the Innovate UK IC Tomorrow contest.
