Overview

The first two decades of the 21st Century have seen over 120 major bridge collapses around the world, claiming some 1000 lives. This talk will review some of those collapses but also look back to how other failures have improved our wider understanding of causes and how lessons can be learnt. Finally, there will be a reflection of our current position; is a lack of investment in an ageing infrastructure, both in financial terms and in people, increasing the risk that more bridges will fail.

Richard Fish

Richard Fish is an independent consultant specialising in bridge asset management. Most of his 40-year career has been in the design, construction and maintenance of bridges, initially with local authorities in the southwest of England but since 2009 running his own business. As well as working for various public and private sector clients in the UK, Richard has also worked on bridge projects in the USA, New Zealand, Turkey and Malaysia. For the last twelve years he has also been the Technical Secretary of the Bridge Owners Forum and in that role sits on the UK Bridges Board.
