As the Built Environment and Infrastructure sectors strive toward meeting net zero carbon objectives, the professions within these sectors – and the skills needed to perform these jobs – will also need to adapt. A new ICE report, Engineering Rebellion, will be launched at this event, and discusses how to adapt to embrace the future engineer, and how this can be transformative for individual civil engineers, the wider engineering profession, the construction and infrastructure industry, and ICE itself.

The wider event will ask:

  • What skills will the climate-aware Built Environment and Infrastructure professionals of the future need to have?
  • How will these professions need to change and adapt, during the working lives of today’s young professionals, in order to meet net zero goals? What are the barriers to these changes, and what is required from today’s industry leaders to bring about these changes?
  • How will higher education in the Built Environment and Infrastructure fields need to evolve, in order to enable these future professionals to get the skills they need?

The event will be split into two components. Beginning with short video submissions from young people and early-career professionals, presenting the key challenges and opportunities as they see them, we will then move into a panel discussion between young professionals and sector leaders. This discussion will build on the issues raised in the videos and point towards potential solutions that can drive progress in these areas.

This event is part of the UK Green Building Council’s Build Back Better virtual series being produced alongside COP26, and has been organised by the Association for Consultancy and Engineering (ACE), the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT), the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT), the Environmental Industries Commission (EIC), the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE), the National Infrastructure Commission (NIC), the National Infrastructure Commission Young People's Panel (NIC YPP), the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI).
