If we are to reach net zero carbon targets we will need to radically transform the places where we live and work. This will require new ways of designing buildings, reconfiguring our transport systems and ensuring neighbourhoods provide people with the services and facilities they need close to hand.

This event will explore how to do this by looking at concepts such as 20-minute neighbourhoods, 15 minute cities, low traffic neighbourhoods and place-based approaches that aim to develop attractive places where people want to live whilst minimising the need to travel and maximising active travel and the use of public transport.

It will look at how to embed zero carbon places into policy and how to support place-based partnership delivery looking at issues and opportunities around the density of places, the location of new development, retrofitting zero carbon, transport and active travel, open space strategies, urban realm improvements and local service provision.

It aims to go beyond concepts and focus on how to make this happen and, in doing so, set out what needs to be put in place and what changes in approach are required.

This event is part of the UK Green Building Council’s Build Back Better virtual series being produced alongside COP26, and has been organised by the Association for Consultancy and Engineering (ACE), the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT), the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT), the Environmental Industries Commission (EIC), the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE), the National Infrastructure Commission (NIC), the National Infrastructure Commission Young People's Panel (NIC YPP), the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI).
