Overview

A fantastic opportunity for networking, this lunchtime event will feature a talk from ICE director general Dr. Janet Young on her career and time with the ICE, with space for questions on Dr. Young’s plan for the ICE.

Following this, we will come together to celebrate regional engineering excellence with a short ceremony for TQUEST Scholars, and the Fairness, Inclusion and Respect (FIR) and Sustainability Champion awards.

Finally, we will hear from Teesside University’s degree apprentices involved with the ICE, presenting on their experience in roles such as Presidents Future Leaders, TQuest Scholars, Student Liaisons, and branch committee chairs. This is the perfect chance to learn more about how the ICE can support your career growth through volunteering, awards, and career development opportunities. 

Later, join us for a lunch and networking session, supported by stalls presenting a variety of volunteering opportunities with the ICE and Teesside University as well as information on how to get more involved with the organisation. Experienced volunteers and ICE staff will be behind the stalls to answer questions and provide further information on their experience.

There is no pressure to sign up to anything on the day, so we urge you to come along and learn about what we have to offer while building connections with like-minded civil engineers from the student to retired levels of membership.

Janet Young

Dr Janet Young joined the ICE as director general and secretary in January 2023.

She has extensive experience in the built environment sector, having most recently worked in the Cabinet Office where she was head of the Government Property Profession, leading the profession and driving the agenda for the property and estates function.

She has also been global director of estates for the British Council, director of estates for the Ministry of Justice, and head of asset management in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

She is a Major Projects Leadership Academy graduate of the Saïd Business School, and a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers, Institution of Royal Engineers, and Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.

Her PhD, Towards Zero Energy Buildings, looked at the challenges and solutions for low carbon and energy developments.
