Concretene, graphene enhanced concrete

Overview

After water, concrete is the most widely used substance on Earth.

It’s also responsible for 8-10% of global CO2 emissions.

Engineers from Nationwide Engineering and scientists from The University of Manchester’s Graphene Engineering Innovation Centre (GEIC) have developed an enhanced concrete that promises to be a game-changer thanks to the transformational addition of 2D material - graphene.

Concretene is a pioneering UK-based technology that is both greener and cheaper – it significantly reduces carbon emissions by:

• Creating a structural enhancement for 99% of the world's concrete
• Up to 50% increase in compressive, tensile and flexural strength
• 100% removal of steel reinforcement & joints in ground bearing and suspended slabs
• Up to 30% removal of the concrete volumes in ground bearing and suspended slabs
• 20% reduction in overall cost
