Designing for Neurodiversity

Jane Simpson

Jane is an Architect and NRAC registered Access Consultant. Throughout her career she has developed a broad range of expertise working within a local authority background, private practice and planning department with over two decades of experience in inclusion.

She provides advice on a broad range of issues, often clarifying complex aspects of the Equality Act 2010, the Special Education Needs and Disability Act 2001 and other statutory and legislative information. Her work encompasses, policy, strategy, operational planning, and working with design and contractor teams on a variety of projects, from infrastructure, through detailed design to handover.

Disability Groups and Organisations

In recent years she has been involved with access groups within large scale projects as well as voluntary contributions to RIBA, DPTAC, CABE, Design Council, BSI, Pocklington Trust, BESiDE at Dundee University and to members of the EHR. Advice is also provided to Sport England and DfE on their documentation.

Helen Kane

Helen is Director of Neuro by Design and Access Included Limited. An innovative expert in inclusive environment issues, she draws on a career of over three decades, working at director level in a variety of property roles. She is known for her ability to identify the key issues quickly and for being incisive and inclusive.

Jean Hewitt

Jean is an NRAC accredited Inclusive Design Consultant at Buro Happold. She is a certified member of the Institute of Workplace and Facilities Management, representing them on BSI’s Committee for BS8300 and other inclusive design standards and is currently technical author for the new PAS 6463: Design for the Mind - Neurodiversity and the Built Environment due to be published late Spring.

An Honorary Associate Professor at the Bartlett, Jean leads the ‘Designing Inclusive Places’ module within UCL’s MSc Health Wellbeing and Sustainable Buildings programme.
