Overview

This brief presentation will describe what is meant by factory thinking in a construction context and how it can begin to address many of the challenges faced by the infrastructure space.

Nick Jones, CEng FICE

Nick is a chartered engineer and Fellow of the ICE with over 30 years of experience in the construction sector. Currently Practice Director for Atkins’ UK Transportation Engineering team, Nick has had a varied career covering commercial buildings, nuclear decommissioning, manufacturing and industrial, aviation and now road and rail transportation.

During a period of some seven years in the manufacturing and industrial sector, principally automotive, Nick was fortunate to have manufacturing professionals within his team. This capability to design production lines in addition to the buildings that enclose them led to a clear focus on client processes and outcomes that add real value. Recognizing that a ‘manufacturing approach’ approach to delivery would have huge value in addressing many of the issues faced by major infrastructure projects, Nick has sought to introduce ‘factory thinking’ into his team’s delivery to seek a step-change in quality and value.
