Overview

The Gravity site in Somerset is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to transform the economy and bring forward a new industrial revolution. It will create more than 7,500 new and high-value jobs centred on advanced manufacturing.

The Gravity Local Development Order (LDO) was adopted by Sedgemoor District Council in February 2022 for the 616-acre site. This has established a fast-track planning regime to enable implementation. The Gravity site has the ability to host large scale advanced manufacturing facilities for the UK, targeting giga factory scale developments to expedite progress toward transport decarbonisation.

The Gravity LDO has consented up to 1.1million square meters of employment floorspace, up to 750 associated dwellings and reinstatement of a redundant rail line as part of a smart campus, designed to facilitate giga scale advanced manufacturing floorspace which in turn will stimulate and initiate economic restructuring for a clean growth economy in Somerset, the region and wider UK.

The Gravity LDO represents one of the largest LDOs ever delivered and in a very short timeframe. Sam Harper of Stantec will explore the reasons for this including the Local Planning Authority’s long-term strategy for reinventing the brownfield site, the positive stakeholder approach taken throughout, and how the LDO is the right tool for this Enterprise Zone site.

A place to work, live and play, Gravity will be a campus that attracts international inward investment and well-paid jobs, new supply chain opportunities, supported with world class training and education. Gravity is not business as usual; it is a trailblazing place for a changing economy that takes fast action on climate change. This will help to bring local benefits and support a more sustainable future.

The event is hosted by the ICE Taunton City Club. Doors to the venue open at 18:00, so why not get there early and start the conversation with your fellow attendees!
