Book nowOverview
Despite the slogan ‘blue for paper, yellow for aluminium cans and brown for plastic bottles’ being well-known among citizens in Hong Kong, the types of paper that can be recycled is very limited, and paper cartons are excluded. A previous survey showed that nearly 80% of the respondents have never recycled paper cartons. This has led to over 27,000 tonnes of recyclable paper cartons directly dumped into public landfills.
Mil Mill is the first pulp mill and education centre that recycles beverage cartons in Hong Kong. Other than the featured beverage cartons, the pulp mill also collects paper documents and confidential documents from offices, and paper waste from retailers in shopping malls. Through thorough cleaning and professional processing, all these wastes can be converted into paper pulp that can be used to reproduce useful paper products.
The two-hour visit comprises two sessions
- Visit to plant and education centre
- Papermaking workshop.
In the first part, participants can go through the whole procedure of paper carton recycling, understanding the plant’s daily operation and maintenance works.
Then, participants can engage hands-on in various papermaking processes, including pulp preparation, sheet formation and drying processes, and create their own unique recycled paper.
Eventually, participants can learn more about the art and science of papermaking, gaining insights into sustainable practices and the recycling process.
