Event organised by ICE
In view of the increasing occurrence of extreme weather, roadways and railways in Hong Kong are susceptible to more frequent cases of damages or blockages. For instance, the 1-in-500-year rainstorm in September 2023 resulted in the collapse of one lane at Shek O Road, and leading to the closure of the only road to and from Shek O/ Tai Long Wan for more than a day.
To maintain adequate transport capacity, it is difficult to regularly close up roadway and railway systems for extensive periods of time, to survey for indicative defects. Additionally, the traditional approach of adopting visual inspection proves to be both inaccurate and lengthy. Considering the advancement in sensor technology, innovative solutions have been developed by the industry to acknowledge such pain points, providing a potentially more efficient alternative surveying method for building robust roadway and railway systems against climate change.
ICE HKA G&S and CIHT HK EPC will co-organise the webinar on adopting innovative surveying technologies for roadway and railway maintenance. In this seminar, Ms Yvonne Cheu from AECOM will provide an introduction to the Road Defect Detection System (RDDS) adopted by the Highways Department in inspecting for roadway damages. Mr Henry Wong from Kodifly will share his experiences in utilising AI and LiDAR technology in identifying obstructions and predicting potential hazards early on.
