Overview

Hong Kong’s mass transit railway system has continued to expand and upgrade in recent years to cope with blossoming urban developments like the Northern Metropolis. It is thus crucial for young engineers curious about Hong Kong’s railway systems, to understand the holistic context of the history of railway planning. This seminar serves to provide insight, for such engineers to support the on-going development of local railway systems in their careers, and understand the significance of facilitating conservation works.

In this seminar, speakers from the local railway interest group - HKRDG will provide a recap of Hong Kong’s railway planning process throughout history. Through a follow-up discussion, participants will gain insights on stakeholder’s opinion on local railway conservation and upcoming railway development trends.

Participants will also have a chance to visit MTRCL’s latest ‘Station Rail Voyage’ Exhibition at Hung Hom Station. The exhibition features MTRCL’s collection of retired trains and train components, including the first-generation electric train "Yellow Head" of the East Rail Line, the Diesel Electric Locomotive "I.B. Trevor", as well as the Mid-life Refurbishment 12-car-train that retired in 2022 to better understand different stages of the development of MTR trains.
