The British Tunnelling Society
The BTS is a vibrant group of tunnelling professionals which spreads knowledge amongst members and the tunnelling industry.
You can catch-up on details or any broadcast and downloads here.
This event is comprised of two parts which will explore the roles of guidance and standards used in tunnelling and how they relate to ethics, professional practice, and legal obligations, with a focus on Eurocodes.
Part 1 (Kieran Tully): Choose Wisely
The role of Eurocodes, British Standards, good practice, ethics, and the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Code of Conduct all play their part in the design, development, and implementation of engineering solutions, demonstrating independent judgement and responsibility, and professional commitment. This portion of the talk is delivered by Kieran Tully, ICE membership development officer and BTS member, who aims to show how these topics relate to the ICE attributes and professional judgement.
Part 2 (Christoph Eberle): Eurocode fundamentals for tunnels
The second part of this lecture will explore fundamental concepts within the Eurocodes including the safety concept, reliability management, recent changes in the latest EN 1992-1-1 (2023) revision, and how to design non-standardised products in the Eurocode context. This portion of the talk is delivered by Christoph Eberle, technical director at Mott MacDonald.
This lecture will benefit those undertaking the design of tunnels, trainees (graduates and apprentices) working towards professional qualification with the ICE, and those who are supervising or mentoring trainees.
Please note that Part 1 will not be recorded in line with the ICE policy on membership preparation webinars. A recording of Part 2 will be made available on the BTS website.
