Overview

This evening lecture will give an introduction to the NEC family of contracts. The NEC contracts were developed by leading experts from the ICE who identified a need for a new standardised contract which would promote good project management.

Since it’s first publication in 1993, the NEC has been used across the world to manage several hundred billion pounds of procurement. A huge amount of development has been done to improve and streamline the contracts with the latest edition NEC4 being released in 2017.

Joseph Burns will give an overview to the NEC contracts and discuss each option (A-F) including key differences, risk profiles and payment mechanisms. The key contractual clauses and responsibilities of the parties will be discussed with a brief explanation of secondary options that are available. To finish the lecture, Joseph will provide insights on his experience of the NEC and how the contracts can be used to deliver collaborative and successful engineering projects.

The session has been designed to target an audience of mixed experience so will cover the fundamental understanding of the contract, key principles which the contract relies on, and will provide discussion points which more experience members may wish to contribute towards during the Q&A section.

Joseph has over 18 years of experience working on projects from £100k to £500 million across the South West of England. Joseph has successfully managed many NEC contracts and is passionate about promoting the benefits that can be seen from collaborative application of the contract from all parties involved.

Known for his positive, influential and inclusive approach to people at all levels, Joseph manages a large, successful commercial team and promotes continual professional development by utilising the experience of the wider company and project team members to provide regular informal training.
