This is the second of the ICE Sustainability Reading Club events, a series of virtual social events to discuss reports and articles relating to sustainability and climate change in the civil engineering sector. Each monthly event will have a chosen piece of reading for discussion. We are hoping to cover the topic from a range of perspectives! While there will be a brief summary of the reading material at the beginning of the meeting, we recommend that attendees read the chosen article ahead of the meeting to ensure they can participate properly.
This February, we will be having a chat about the Get It Right Initiative! The Get It Right Initiative is all about reducing errors in the construction industry. Errors throughout the stages of an engineering project cause not only significant financial losses, but a waste of resources with notable impacts on the emissions and waste of a project. To improve sustainability in our work, we need to improve efficiency, and reduce the wastage of both material and working time, with its associated emissions, due to rework. For our reading, we will be discussing the Call to Action, a summary of the key errors and waste in our industry, and the Guide to Improving Value, a proposal for ways to reduce design error – one of the key causes of inefficiency.
The purpose of the Reading Club is to encourage open conversation around sustainability in our industry, help to keep civil engineers up to date with relevant news and literature, and provide a friendly, informal networking opportunity for any that wish to attend. While it is organised with early careers professionals in mind, the event is open to anyone that would like to join the conversation!
Committee members will be present to provide some prompts and questions to get the conversation going and moderate the conversation if need be.
For those of us with a long list of things-to-read that never seems to get shorter, this event is a great opportunity to make time for a bit of reading and a chat with a group of peers!
