Overview

ICE North West Chair, Yuli, Chaido Doulala-Rigby, invites all regional members to attend this key seminar, as part of ICE President Ed McCann’s direct engagement with members.

The panel session will be chaired by Ed McCann, with input from three prestigious transport industry leaders, programme as follows:

As part of the event, we’d welcome your questions and views on transport developments, the importance of connectivity for levelling up of the economy and delivery of decarbonisation.

Yuli (Chaido) Doulala-Rigby

Yuli is the Chief Civil Engineer for Tensar International, which is globally renowned for inventing polymeric soil reinforcing and stabilising geogrids.

After ten years working in Hong Kong as a Geotechnical Engineer, she returned to the UK and joined Tensar, maintaining overall responsibility of their Eastern Hemisphere Design Team for more than a decade.

More recently, whilst still involved in delivering training, project risk management and high-level advice on scheme feasibility studies, she has diverted her focus largely towards Business Development and educating the industry globally on the benefits of geosynthetics in construction.

Ed McCann

Ed graduated from Imperial College London in 1989 with a degree in Civil Engineering. During twelve years with Binnie & Partners he obtained a Master’s Degree in Hydraulic Engineering and worked on some fifty infrastructure projects all over the world.

He joined Expedition Engineering in 2002 where he has been the Project Director for many projects including the multi award winning Infinity Bridge and the Olympic 2012 Velodrome. He currently works on major projects and programs in the UK and internationally where he focuses on strategic engineering design and improving productivity across the asset lifecycle. 

Ed was instrumental in the growth and development of Expedition from a “back bedroom start-up” to Building Magazine’s Engineering Consultant of the Year in 2012.

In 2009, Ed and the two other owners of Expedition set up a social enterprise called the Useful Simple Trust and gave the company to the employees. He is now a Trustee of the UST, which has a number of award-winning companies specialising in Engineering, Communications Design, Architecture, Education and Sustainability.

He is a Royal Academy Visiting Professor of Innovation and a member of the UK’s i3P Strategic Leadership Group which is focused on innovating across the built environment. 

He co-created cross industry initiatives including: the Constructionarium, the Get It Right Initiative and the Expedition Workshed.

Ed has been actively involved in design education since 1999 and he is a Royal Academy of Engineering Visiting Professor of Innovation.

Tim is a chartered civil engineer with over forty years’ experience in the design, construction and management of major infrastructure projects, encompassing the engineering and maintenance of operational high speed and classic rail.

In 2012 Tim joined CH2M Hill as International Director for High Speed Rail and was seconded to HS2 where he was Chief Engineer and Lead witness in Parliament for the Phase 1 and Phase 2a Hybrid Bills. Tim joined HS2 in April 2018 and is currently Managing Director for Phase 2.

Martin Tugwell

Martin is responsible for transforming pan-Northern connectivity in order to improve productivity and drive economic growth. He leads Transport for the North as England’s first sub-national Transport Body, giving the North a strong, unified and determined voice on transport investment to benefit the region. Martin has more than 20 years’ experience in strategic transport and infrastructure planning at national, regional and local levels.

David Stones

David Stones is a Chartered Engineer with over thirty years’ experience in feasibility studies, design, project/programme management and implementation of complex transport initiatives, including some time overseas. He is currently the Network Planning Director for National Highways, responsible for the strategic planning and future development of the strategic road network.
