Rampion Visitor Centre 76-81 King's Road Arches Brighton, BN1 2FN
Register to attend this event in person.
The Rampion Offshore Wind Farm is the first wind farm to be constructed off the south coast of England. It is located between 13 and 20 km from the Sussex coast and stretches from Worthing to Brighton. It covers an area of 72 square kilometres (just larger than the island of Guernsey).
Rampion is operated and maintained by RWE from a purpose-built base at Newhaven Port. The wind farm comprises 116 turbines, each rated at 3.45MW, providing an installed capacity of 400MW and generating almost 1,400 GWh of power each year. This is equivalent to the electricity used annually by almost 350,000 homes, or around half the homes in Sussex.
This event will start with a visit to the Rampion Visitor Centre on Brighton Sea Front. The centre houses exhibitions, videos, a VR experience and other interactive displays, enabling visitors to learn more about offshore wind energy, global climate change and the whole Rampion story since its inception over ten years ago. A talk will be given to our group about the construction and operation of the wind farm.
Meet at the Rampion Visitor Centre, Brighton, situated to the East of the i360 viewing tower.
Provisional arrangements are being made for lunch at a nearby Brighton pub or restaurant if group members wish to take this option. Further details will be advised to those booked on to the event.
After lunch, group members will make their own way to Newhaven Marina where we will board a charter boat to take us out to view the wind turbines at close quarters. The skipper will give a commentary about the operation and maintenance of the wind farm. The trip will start at 3pm and is expected to take about two hours, returning to Newhaven along the cliffs of Telscombe and Peacehaven.
The cost of the boat trip is £33 per person (Visitor Centre access is free, the cost of optional lunch is excluded). Places on the boat are limited so early booking is advised. Costs will be refunded in the event of cancellation due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
The nearest car parking for the Brighton Visitor Centre is at the Regency Square car park (BN1 2FG) and Churchill Square car park (BN1 2FB) (cheaper).
