ICE will be exploring the topic of Digital Engineering under the presidency of leading expert Professor Tim Broyd. Following on from the release of the State of the Nation 2017: Digital Transformation, ICE London is delighted to announce our new Knowledge Programme: Making London Smarter.

Making London Smarter, running from September to December 2017 will examine how London can benefit from new and emerging technologies in the infrastructure sector. The series of event bring together leading specialists, industry experts and decision makers to answer questions such as:

  • What are the new technologies that we can expect to see over the coming years?
  • What opportunities and challenges do they pose?
  • How will they affect how we live, work and travel in London?
  • How do we make London a smart city?

Our first lecture in the series will be Making London Smarter: A Circular Economy Approach.

A 'circular economy' (take, make, use, remake) promotes the reduction, reuse, remanufacture and recycling of all resources and waste.

The London Infrastructure Plan 2050, published by the GLA in 2014, predicts the Capital's population will hit eight million by 2030 and 11 million by 2050. The growth in residents will increase London's use of resources and production of waste. Without a significant change in how we manage these systems, we risk making London's growth unsustainable – threatening the continued success of the Capital.

Principal Consultant at Building Research Establishment (BRE)

Katherine Adams is a Principal Consultant at BRE and has worked in the area of construction resource efficiency for over 15 years. This includes developing solutions for the reduction of waste and improving waste management across the construction supply chain. She has also assisted Government in the development of policy and regulation. She is now undertaking a PhD at Loughborough University, funded by BRE Trust on how to embed a circular economy in the building sector and continues to provide technical expertise at BRE.


Professor David Gann CBE CEng FICE FCGI

David Gann

Vice-President, Innovation, Imperial College London

David Gann is a university and business leader, strategist and advocate with extensive international experience in innovation and technology management. He is Imperial College London's Vice-President (Innovation) and member of the College's Executive Board.

David is Professor of Innovation and Technology Management with a PhD in Industrial Economics. He is a Chartered Civil Engineer, Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers, Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Art and Fellow of the City & Guilds Institute.

His distinctive strengths include proactively building relationships and influencing decision-makers to connect ideas, research and solutions, between business, universities and government. His research spans strategy, management science and systems engineering, particularly on innovation and infrastructure in the digital economy.

David has deep experience in mentoring start-ups, supporting fast growth technology businesses and developing long-term strategic partnerships with multinational technology corporations.

He is Chairman of the Smart London Board, reporting to the Mayor of London – he was previously a member of the London Enterprise Panel (LEP).

David is Non-Executive Director at Directa Plus plc, the world's largest producer of pristine graphene. His industrial experience includes serving as Laing O'Rourke plc's Group Executive for research and innovation. He developed Crossrail's Innovation Strategy with Crossrail's CEO and guided its implementation. He advises executives and boards on innovation and technology management, including Citigroup, IBM, Huawei, McLaren and Tata Group.

David was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2010 Queen's Birthday Honours for services to engineering, and received the 2014 Tjalling C. Koopmans Asset Award for extraordinary contributions to the economic sciences.

David is author of many academic papers and co-author of seven books including:
