Because of a favourable property portfolio we are finding shapes and systems of Fibre Reinforced Polymers (FRPs) Increasingly being used in civil engineering works. In this seminar our speaker Professor Toby Mottram, from the school of engineering at the University of Warwick, will briefly introduce these FRP materials and their composite processing methods.
Toby’s introduction will be followed by an overview on a number of innovative FRP projects for field examples in the UK. Many of these ‘unique’ projects are with Network Rail who have been very prominent in wanting to exploit the sustainable credentials of FRPs as a ‘new’ structural engineering material. In the second part of the seminar, the speaker will explain the design approaches employed for the structural engineering of a FRP house unit that is called ’Startlink’. The information to be presented is from the outcomes of a TSB (now Innovate UK) R&D project.

Toby is an academic staff in the School of Engineering at The University of Warwick. He is internationally known for his structural engineering research with pultruded fibre reinforced polymer shapes and systems, often directed to inform the writing of design standards or codes of practice. By way of combined computational analyses and physical testing he specialises in the reliable and safe design of joints when the method of connection is by bolting. He is working on two EPSRC projects, one of which will characterise the dynamic performance of the Startlink house. He is co-author of 150 publications and his biographical details are given at
