About this event

This event, open to students, graduates and members, will deliver an insight into the design and construction of structures that rely on materials that some professional engineers are not as familiar with as the traditional go-to materials of reinforced concrete and steel.

Topics that will be discussed include;

  • Engineering design of timber (including solid timber, glulam, ply etc)
  • Why and how engineers should be designing in low or negative carbon solid timber
  • Benefits of masonry as a low carbon material (block, brick and stone)
  • Case studies of timber and masonry design and construction

This event is ideal for those wanting to broaden their knowledge of engineering materials or those who simply want a refresher on materials that they have previously worked with. The sustainable characteristics of these materials will also be discussed further along with their applications as low-carbon construction materials.
