This joint event is being run with IET and IMechE.

The debate aims to explore the implementation of the Northern Powerhouse, first coined by George Osborne as part of the Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition government, and the role of the engineering profession in turning a concept into reality.

A Question Time-style debate with panellists from a broad spectrum of backgrounds. The debate will offer insight into how the engineering community can capitalise on the idea of the Northern Powerhouse and what is already being done to drive it forward.

The debate Chair will be posing pre-submitted questions to the panel and taking questions from the audience on the night.


The currently confirmed debate panel includes:

  • John Mothersole, Chief Executive of Sheffield City Council
  • David Grey MBE, Chairman of Sheffield City Trust & Executive Chairman of OSL Group Holdings
  • Rt Hon Richard Caborn, ex-MP for Sheffield Central and ex-government minister
