Overview

The Thames Valley Early Career Network is delighted to bring you another 5-week lecture series on contracts for civil engineering. This time it is on contract strategy: how contracts can be structured to allocate risk and reward. This directly affects the amount for risk a contractor or consultant includes in its Prices and affects motivations during the contract. Good contract strategy can drive collaboration and successful delivery whereas bad contract strategy drives the opposite.

The lectures will be provided by Dr Jon Broome. Jon is a trained civil engineer and has over 25 years of practical experience as a consultant, being a recognised expert practitioner on the NEC contract family and on contracts and procurement for projects and programmes. His list of publications includes authoring the ‘NEC4: a user’ guide’, which is available in the ICE bookshop.

The 5-week course will take place on-line every Tuesday from 01 October until 29 October starting at 16.30 to finish by 18.00. Topics will include:

  • 01 October | Overview of the NEC’s objectives. The principles and process for developing a contract strategy.
  • 08 October | NEC4 contracts – an overview of each member of the NEC4 family of contracts, outlining what are they and when to use them.
  • 15 October | Contract strategy choices focussing primarily on the main payment options of the Engineering and Construction Contract – what are they, when to use them and key considerations for implementation.
  • 22 October | Finish off above and start review of secondary options including relevant contract data entries.
  • 29 October | Finish off above and course review.

Each subject will also compare NEC to both FIDIC and JCT contracts.
