Overview

Throughout your career, there will be many moments when being the best possible version of you, and making the right connections with the people that matter most in your career will be critical to your on-going success. This could be at your Professional Review, during your PDR, or when applying for a new role; the possibilities are endless. But how do you do this in the most effective way, especially if you don't find these sorts of things come naturally?

You need to build the skills you need... to succeed.

Join the Thames Valley Early Careers Network and Chris Carey (Founder and managing director of communication and engagement specialists, Axiom Communications) on this five-week course designed to help you not only survive, but thrive, in a wide variety of situations – both in-person and online.

Each week we will focus on a different topic:

  • Week 1 | Thursday 27 June | The Power of Storytelling
  • Week 2 | Thursday 04 July | The Power of Storytelling: The Sequel
  • Week 3 | Tuesday 16 July | How to Present Brilliantly Online
  • Week 4 | Thursday 25 July| How to Build Rapport
  • Week 5 | Thursday 01 August | The Power of Networking

Session 1 - The Power of Storytelling:

Storytelling is a powerful way to share business ideas, plans and strategies – however, telling a compelling story is harder than it seems. This session will allow you to harness the power of business storytelling and deliver an impactful narrative. You will leave with an improved ability to communicate effectively and will understand the key concepts required to develop and deliver a powerful story. These skills may be of particular use in your Professional Review presentation, or when communicating with a range of stakeholders.

Session 2 – The Power of Storytelling: The Sequel:

We will use this session to practice your freshly learned tips, tricks, and techniques to telling a captivating story, giving you the floor to share a business experience with us and learn from your peers. We will also use this session to start considering some of the themes that will be touched on in Week 3 as we look at presenting brilliantly online. This might be a particularly useful session to practice your Professional Review presentation, prepare for a job interview, or run through a public speaking engagement.

Session 3 - How to Present Brilliantly Online:

With the increase in remote working, many of us spend much of our day in virtual meetings, which can often blend together. This session will look at how to create a presentation that stands out and makes a big impact on the small screen. We will give you tips, tricks, and techniques to structure and deliver your content and make a memorable impression on your audience. You will leave the session inspired to take the best practices from the ‘face to face’ world, together with new techniques for the digital age. Your new-found confidence will make your presentations lead off the screen straight into the hearts and minds of your audience.  As well as the clear benefits to daily working, this session will be of particular use in the context of Professional Review, many of which are now taking place online.

Session 4 - How to Build Rapport:

Collaborative team-working and strong client relationships are imperative to delivering successful projects, but we are all wired differently, which can make forging a connection difficult; what works with one person may not be as effective with someone else. This session will explore the fundamentals of how to successfully build rapport with anyone, enhancing your working relationships and supporting a more collaborative culture. You’ll be able to identify your own learning and communication style as well as those of others. You’ll learn how to flex your approach to adapt to the different styles of others and will be able to employ helpful techniques, such as matching, mirroring, and pacing.

Session 5 - The Power of Networking:

Networking is an extremely powerful skill to have, but approaching a stranger can be incredibly daunting. This session will benefit those who find networking uncomfortable or want to enhance their skills in this area. We will discuss how to have greater networking confidence and focus your approach to create a valuable network. You’ll leave this session with the skills to enhance your reputation as someone who makes things happen. You’ll have greater confidence when networking and can choose to use it to advance the career, business, and personal goals of yourself and others.

The course will be delivered virtually over five weeks. Upon completion, each attendee will receive a certificate that can be used as CPD evidence.
