Project background
Construction for this £3m Environment Agency scheme to provide flood defence improvements to the village of Clyst St. Mary was completed in 2021. The scheme provides a 1-in-100-year standard of protection from fluvial flooding for the community, reducing the risk of flooding for 50 properties.
Key elements of the scheme are timber-capped steel sheet piles, earth embankments, a concrete access ramp and two sets of demountable stoplog defences.
Site visit
The tour will cover the length of the defences, highlighting the different construction techniques that were used, problematic issues that had to be overcome during design and construction, and the ongoing operation with community volunteers.
A limited number of spaces are available, so early booking is advisable. Attendees are not required to wear PPE, however, conditions are wet, so appropriate footwear is essential.
To undertake the full tour attendees must be comfortable walking a reasonable distance over farmland and crossing styles. However, parts of the site visit (on the historic bridge and in nearby Frog Lane) are accessible for those with reduced mobility.
Attendees should meet at the entrance to the bridge, opposite the Half Moon Inn in Clyst St Mary. Free parking is available behind the pub on Frog Lane.
The event has been organised by the ICE Exeter City Club and the ICE Exeter Early Careers Network. Everyone is welcome.
