Overview

In this lecture Lucy will describe the award-winning Lyon Turin high speed rail project, and specifically the 57 km long trans-border underground section between St Jean de Maurienne in France and Suza in Italy.  Lucy will focus on the SMP4 contract and the main engineering and technical challenges caused by the particular geotechnical complexities posed by the geology.

Identifying risks during the design phase and controlling them during construction is crucial to the successful completion of any project, and even more so for a geotechnical reconnaissance tunnel with very sparse technical input data. Before this 11 km section of reconnaissance tunnel was constructed, partly by tunnel boring machine, and partly by traditional drill and blast, it was not known if the construction of the line would actually be possible, given the highly deformable carboniferous ground in this area, combined with 700 to 900 m of ground cover.

After the lecture, there will be a networking drinks reception. A £10 contribution is required to attend the lecture, which includes the wine reception. If you would like to participate in these events, please proceed by using the 'book now' button. This will enable you to register your interest by emailing [email protected], and you will be provided with the payment details. Otherwise, payment can be made by cash or card during your attendance.

Spaces will be limited and allocated subject to availability in the order of receipt of a formal registration.
