Engineering decisions of the past saw Liverpool as the unofficial second city of the British Empire.
Engineering helped solve problems in the city created by unprecedented population density, sanitation requirements and the needs of international transport of people and goods.
This walking tour will take us on an external street-level view of many buildings and sites in and around the city centre which are of engineering interest.
The route length is approximately 3km (less than 2 miles) from start to finish, however guests are free to curtail participation at their convenience. The tour is within access to public transport/amenities.
A free bowl of scouse is included at the Ship & Mitre following the tour (for those who have pre-booked only). Please notify us in advance if you have any special dietary requirements as we may not be able to accommodate last minute requests on the day.
Preparing for the event:
- The weather might be wet – please do check forecasts and wear suitable clothing.
- There is a lot of walking involved. Please wear suitable footwear and don’t be afraid to let the guide know if you need to stop for a rest.
- Please bring your own water to make sure you stay hydrated during the tour.
- Photography is welcome. If you are partaking in the tour then please understand that other guests may be taking photographs.
- The entire tour takes place within public spaces, and often crossing public highway. Please observe a common sense approach, especially when walking near live carriageways.
Please note: pre-booking is limited to 25 people for catering purposes.
However, if you have been unable to reserve a place on the tour you are still welcome to join us for the walk – just be at the meeting point and tag along!
This event is organised by ICE Merseyside Branch and ICE NW Early Careers, based on earlier work undertaken by members of the Historical Engineering Group.
