Overview

Hydrogen power has gained traction globally as a clean and sustainable energy solution. Considering Hong Kong’s target of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, the recent publication of ‘The Strategy of Hydrogen Development in Hong Kong’ in June 2024 sets out a blueprint for the adoption of hydrogen energy in Hong Kong. It is thus crucial for young engineers to acquire a multi-disciplinary perspective of the issue to support the technical development of new energy sources in their professional careers.

The upcoming ICE HKA G&S X IET YMS CPD joint webinar on ‘Hydrogen horizons - the role of hydrogen in Hong Kong’s green energy transition’ features Mr Marco Lam from Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) and Mr Eric Ho from CityBus Limited.

Both speakers will provide an overview of the technical, economic and policy considerations of the local adoption of hydrogen in different industries, based on the government's new development strategy. Both speakers will also present recent case studies and comments on the feasibility of implementing such energy.

Throughout the event, the first hour will feature two 30-minute presentations from both speakers, followed by a 20-minute Q&A session for online participants to raise their queries.

Marco Lam

Mr Marco Lam is an engineer of the Gas Standards Office of the Electrical & Mechanical Services Department (i.e. the EMSD). He has been working in the office for more than 5 years for regulating gas safety.

The Government has established an Inter-departmental Working Group on Using Hydrogen as Fuel (i.e. the Working Group) to provide a fast track to the hydrogen fuel development in Hong Kong. The EMSD, being one of the members of the Working Group, has been providing support to the industry in electrical, mechanical and gas safety to take forward hydrogen fuel development.

Mr Marco Lam is a member of the hydrogen team of EMSD responsible for assisting the Working Group in examining applications for trial projects of hydrogen fuel including hydrogen filling stations, hydrogen fuel cell power generation systems and other hydrogen installations.

Eric Ho

Mr Eric Ho has both electrical and mechanical engineering academic background and has been in the public bus engineering field for many years. He has a strong interest in automotive technical development and strives to drive Hong Kong’s decarbonisation agenda, including deployment of the first double deck battery electric bus in the market and the research and development of hydrogen fuel cell bus solution.

He has been heavily involved in the research and development of Hong Kong’s first electric double deck bus licensed in early 2022 as well as the first hydrogen fuel cell double deck bus successfully licensed in November 2023. He is also responsible for the technical aspect of Hong Kong’s first Hydrogen Refuelling Station.
