Overview

Ramsgate Tunnel, or Ramsgate Harbour Access Tunnel is an 800-meter-long tunnel that carries the A299 Royal Harbour Approach, a Primary Route in Ramsgate, Kent as designated by Kent County Council. The tunnel was constructed to provide direct access to the Port of Ramsgate, avoiding the requirement for traffic to pass through Ramsgate town centre.

This site visit will be hosted by Kent County Council, in which you will have the firsthand experience of witnessing how the local council will carry out the inspection and maintenance of tunnel structures. The site visit will take place at 9.30 am on the 11 of June 2024.

The meeting point will be at the layby outside the tunnel building at the west end of the tunnel (What3words reference: ///vast.probably.airbase). On-site parking is available and please be aware that attendees can only legally access the tunnel from the roundabout at the junction of the A299, A255 and Royal Harbour Approach on their vehicle. No on-foot access will be permitted during a tunnel closure.

You will need to prepare your PPE to attend the site visit, and the list of PPE required is as follows:

  • Hard hat
  • Eye protection goggles
  • Hi-vis trousers
  • Hi-vis jacket
  • Safety gloves
  • Mid-sole protective safety boots

There will be only 12 spaces available so please book as soon as possible only if you intend to attend.
