Overview

Energy is a vital component for any society, with buildings across industrial, commercial, residential, and transportation sectors consuming substantial amounts of fossil-based energy, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions and global warming. Inefficient design, installation, and usage, particularly in air conditioning systems, exacerbate energy wastage.

According to the Japan Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Industry Association, global demand for air conditioners is steadily increasing at a rate of approximately 17%. A report from the Authority for Electricity Regulation of Oman revealed that residential, commercial, and governmental buildings accounted for 76-83% of electrical consumption in 2016.

Understanding and analysing cooling systems in buildings, including design, operation, and maintenance, along with exploring alternative technologies, are crucial for enhancing building performance and energy optimization strategies in Oman.

This lecture aims to delve into concepts such as Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER), Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER), and Coefficient of Performance (COP) for various chillers, as well as alternative refrigerants and sustainable design principles.

Organised by the ICE Oman Committee, this online event is aimed at a diverse audience, including civil engineers, architects, and environmental specialists interested in sustainable cooling. It offers a wealth of insights, practical examples, and recommendations to advance the mission of sustainable building practices.
