Overview

Somerset Council is delivering Celebration Mile in Bridgwater, a route through the town from Bridgwater station to the historic docks that promotes active travel—as part its long-term plan to regenerate Bridgwater town centre. The transformational scheme was originally identified in the Bridgwater Vision and the town investment plan to secure funding from central government, as part of the council’s vision between now and 2050.

Stantec’s team has worked on the regeneration of Bridgwater since 2018 and is well versed in Somerset Council’s vision for the community. This established relationship led to Stantec being appointed to deliver the work under an Option G contract.

Celebration Mile encompasses several connected public-realm based, regeneration projects. Stantec was appointed to deliver Angel Crescent, Clare Street, and Eastover. All are transport-led schemes with a focus on encouraging active travel measures. Stantec has worked from feasibility and planning through to delivery, providing services ranging from transport planning and infrastructure design to secure funding and consents.

Eastover, Angel Crescent, and Clare Street have all received planning consent and technical approval and are now moving into delivery by contractor Taylor Woodrow, with Stantec continuing in a design support role through delivery. Ultimately, the projects will provide new places to eat and shop while highlighting the importance of the surrounding conservation areas.

Sam Harper, planning director and Dan Gough, associate civil engineer, will tell the story of Stantec’s involvement through the process.
